When Deepika Padukone lost out on Mary Kom biopic to Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra’s 2o14 release, Mary Kom – a biopic on the boxer, was a big chapter in the actress’ career life. She had already proven her acting nuances yet was on a conquest to do more, achieve more. When debutante director, Omung Kumar offered her a biopic on ace Indian boxer, Mary Kom, she didn’t think twice before giving it her nod. The movie was earlier offered to Rani Mukerji but the actress rejected it for reasons better known to her. When PeeCee came on board, she was fully aware that she can never look like her. But Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who produced the movie wanted to narrate her story, so the medium through which he would narrate didn’t matter to him. The Indian boxer today, entered the final round at the Commonwealth Games 2018, Australia, against Anusha Dilrukshi Koddithuwakku of Sri Lanka. Mary has already ensured a silver medal for the country and there are high chances that she might secure a gold as well.
While Priyanka completely justified her selection for the biopic and even nailed the character to the hilt, there was another actress who was eyeing her role. The actress in question here is Deepika Padukone. Coming from a sports background, DP was always inclined to do a biopic on a sports personality. She was well aware of Mary Kom’s accomplishments even before she became famous for everyone to recognise her. In one of her early interactions with PTI, the Padmaavat actress was quoted saying that she would love to do a biopic on the ace boxer. “I would have loved to do a biopic on Mary Kom, but now Priyanka Chopra is doing it. I feel she is right for the film. I am glad a film on Mary Kom is being made. People have started recognising her. At least her achievements will not go waste.” When two years ago I used to talk about Mary Kom, everyone was clueless. Today when a film is being made on her, everyone seems to have some interest in her,” she added.
