Raazi will not be shot in Kashmir but in Mumbai. – No Kashmir for Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal’s Raazi
Raazi starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal is based on Harinder Sikka’s bestselling novel, Calling Sehmat. The film revolves around a Kashmiri spy (Alia Bhatt), who gets married to a Pakistani Army Officer (Vicky Kaushal). Obviously, Kashmir forms an important part of the plot. In fact, director Meghna Gulzar was recently in the valley to scout for locations but now they will shoot in Mumbai instead. Huge sets have been erected in the city. The reason for this transfer was the unrest in the valley.
Mid-Day informs that they don’t have necessary permissions for the same. An unit member revealed to the daily, “The original plan was to start the shoot in the Valley. However, Kashmir has been knocked off in the first schedule. Rumours are rife that Ansarul Khilafah Jammu Kashmir (the Indian facet of the IS) is threatening the local police with violence and, in such a situation, it’s in everyone’s best interest to not shoot the film in the state.” Talking further about the sets, the source reported, “A few local Kashmiri workers are building the set. Since the decor of the homes has to be authentic, local Kashmiri artworks and curios will be flown down by the producers. The set will take a few weeks to be complete.”
Alia and Vicky will start shooting the film in Punjab first and then move to Mumbai. Later, there’s also a Delhi schedule planned. Talking about the film, Meghna Gulzar, told Mumbai Mirror, “I am trying to do something in a new space, recreating India and Pakistan of the ’70s on sets and real locations. A lot of research has gone into getting the period and dialect right. There are some action pieces too. It’s work in progress with workshops and reading sessions.” When asked why a title like that, Gulzar explains, “It’s only when you agree to something that you eventually end up doing it and live with the consequences. ‘Raazi’ is a synonym of ‘sehmat’ which also means agreeable.” She is confident Alia has never played a character of such nature before calling it a challenging role for her.
