EXCLUSIVE! ‘Since no big names turn up, it turned into a joke,’ says Sophie Choudry on the #MeToo movement –
Singer Sophie Choudry is all excited as her new single Aaj Naiyo Sonna has released and is making waves. Sophie, who celebrates her birthday tomorrow, visited the den of BollywoodLife for a fun Facebook Live. During the discussion, we asked the artist on her thoughts about the revolutionary #MeToo movement that broke the media last year. “It didn’t turn out as good as it should have the way it was in America. In India, very few people came out. If some bigger names would have spoken up, then it would have given courage to a lot of people to speak up. Since bigger names didn’t turn up it almost turned into a joke,” Sophie said.
Talking further about it, she added, “I’m glad some movement has happened. As a woman, it is impossible that you would have not faced harassment. So MeToo has put people on guards. Now anybody who misbehaves will think twice before doing anything.” She also raised her concerns with regards to the people who question women and ask for proof. “How are you going to see the proof? At the end of the day, you have to believe the woman. (Although) a lot of time even woman also derail the situation.”
There is always a second side to the coin. There was a debate going on with regards to director Rajkumar Hirani’s involvement in the #MeToo movement. Many raised concerns saying that we are already passing judgments without any proceedings. On this, Sophie expressed, “In such movements, there would be collateral damage but for me, it’s for the greater good.” She then continued, “I never had any vibe from him. He is very lovely whenever we have met. I know friends of mine like Dia (Mirza) who have worked with him. (So) There is that initial moment of not wanting to believe (it). But on the other hand, then you are passing the judgment on that girl. It’s a tricky situation to be in. Sometimes you want to believe the women but there are many who have tried derailed it.”
Sophie in the end also mentioned that many still have no idea about what #MeToo movement is. “There is a little bit of flirtation between men and women that is natural but you can’t put a stop to that. You just need to know when you tell a man that you aren’t comfortable and if she still persists that is harassment,” she iterated.
