Gender pay gap has been a much debated topic in the entertainment industry. Be it in East or even West, actresses have always believed that the pay gap between male and female stars in the industry is unjustified and not deserving at all. While Hollywood still took some measures to ensure this unfair practice is put out of order, Bollywood on the other side has been unaffected. Many actresses including Sonam Kapoor and recently Taapsee Pannu have voiced their opinion on how it’s not justified and there’s no good reason to preach this. Yes, the issue is debatable and there are two sides locking horns with each another but yet, the fact that it’s unreasonable holds true. While producers feel that actors have a face value, it’s unfair for actresses. Deepika Padukone, during her recent chat with Rajeev Masand, revealed a way how this pay gap should be ideally lessened and why.

Rajeev Masand asked her to comment on Karan Johar or Salman Khan’s belief that a price that actor quotes depends on the returns he can get and if she’s even satisfied with that logic. To this she said, “Partly. But there has to be some other way of figuring this out. In fact, I don’t feel that actors (actresses here) should be charging more and more fees, but male actors should start charging less amount to reduce the pay gap not the other way around. Because you are burdening the film then. I understand that somewhere those numbers are justified but there has to be a way out. Because it’s really damaging the business. I agree I don’t understand the business of cinema in India but I do know that something needs to be fixed. I do feel that it’s not about women asking for more but men asking for less.” Deepika was also paid more than both of her male co-stars in Padmaavat because the movie revolved completely around her. This welcoming change was then applauded by the entire industry.

Well, that wasn’t the only revelation she made or rather voiced on her chat show. She even gave a subtle hint on her so called marriage rumours with beau Ranveer Singh. If the actress is to be believed, she isn’t getting married to him anytime soon but she’ll know when she is ready.
